Whining

A few months ago, a friend told me that 12-18 months (approximately) were some of her most difficult with her son because he was at an age where he knew what he wanted but couldn't clearly communicate it to her. It made sense to me at the time, but now that Baby B is almost 15 months, I know exactly what she means!

Baby B is developing new sounds and syllables all the time. This week it was the letter "p", which led to "words" sounding like happy, papa, pow-pow, and pap-pap! None of these sounds, however, have been combined into words that are all that useful yet. Baby B can clearly communicate more, thank you, please, and all done through baby sign language, but the rest is left to gestures and whining. Poor guy, I feel for him. It's such a victory for all of us when Hubby T or I realize that his wild arm waving and hollering in the middle of dinner means, "Give me milk!" Standing by the back door or the kitchen window and screaming is a little easier to figure out - "Take me outside!" We generally know what he wants when he points to the top of his toy closet or the top of the book case. It's still a mystery though what he wants when he signs "more" on the changing table...

I know that words will come eventually, but in the meantime, I wrote a little diddy to amuse myself (and hopefully you) that helps me not take this whiney attitude so seriously. Hang in there Baby B, we'll get through these phase together!!

"I'm a Little Whiner" (to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot")

I'm a little whiner, short and stout,
Whenever I don't get my way, you will hear me shout!
When I get all steamed up, there will be no doubt,
I will just get louder and louder till you help me out!!
